There isn’t much time to acclimatize to each time zone. Depending how far the country is away we fly on a Sunday and fly back eight to nine days later. I generally spend just over a week in each country. How long do you work in an overseas destination for? I plan on travelling to Sydney and the Gold Coast from Melbourne for seven days before flying to KL (and then onto Bahrain). I am doing an extended stay between Australia and Malaysia in March/April. All the costs whilst we’re not working are our costs, but in theory the costly flights are paid for. It’s the company’s responsibility to fly you to and from a country for an event, so as employees we are entitled to fly out early or fly back later. Has your job allowed you to fit in your own personal travel plans?Ī great perk is the ability to have extended stays. However, I love my job and it’s something I was aware of when I started, but there are opportunities open to us. Sightseeing is limited to the travel time between the three places. It’s always a joke within the industry that you’ll see three places the track, the hotel and the airport. Due to the days starting so early and finishing late, the energy levels have certainly depleted by the end of day, so exploring the city you are staying in requires great effort, especially as you know you’ll have a long day and week ahead.

I don’t get the chance to travel far or have much free time in each country I visit to really appreciate it. Do you get to explore the new destinations you visit? The job is extremely intense and I work long hours whilst working abroad. We do have to share rooms with fellow colleagues, but after five years’ service we get upgraded to single occupancy rooms. However, in Japan we stayed in a Novotel hotel and my view was of air-conditioning units. In Singapore we stayed in the 5* Stamford Swissotel which overlooked the whole of Singapore. I am fortunate to stay in very nice hotels or not-so-nice hotels. What is your accommodation like when you work abroad? Austin is a college town and it’s quite a party place to be. I love it and I love American people, they’re friendly and accommodating. America is a Marmite place you either love it or hate it. Everything there seems different from home and it’s pleasantly challenging to get by. It was fun, and it forces you (in a nice way) to be submerged in the Japanese lifestyle and culinary choices. I found myself using my hands with the local and just pointing at menus to order without having a clue what I was ordering. When you travel you can usually survive by guessing at menus in restaurants, or find someone who speaks English to help you, but in Japan it’s unusual to see English in menus. Do you have a favourite place you visited through your job? I class it as a “home from home” with better weather, if you like hot and humid.

I have also been fortunate to travel to Singapore and I loved it. I have really enjoyed experiencing and spending the time I have in each country. So far I have travelled to Singapore, Japan (Nagoya), India (New Delhi), USA (Austin, Texas) and Brazil (Sao Paulo) in 2013. What countries and cities has you job taken you?
